When preparing for a big trip, getting everything packed and ready to go (without forgetting anything) is the biggest task travelers face. If you have a baby, then not only do you have to pack for yourself, but you have also got to pack for the little one too. And, believe it or not, babies generally require more stuff than adults do on trips. So, what exactly do you need to bring for your little bundle of joy on your next trip?
Feeding Supplies. This is probably the most important thing to remember when packing for a baby. There’s one sure fire way to ensure a noisy trip and that’s forgetting to pack the feeding supplies. Bottles, extra nipples, formula/breast milk and cereal (if you need it) are all essential items. Don’t leave home without them! Also, if you are breastfeeding, you most likely are pumping too. Therefore, don’t leave home without the pump and its corresponding parts.
Portable Crib. The next thing you need to remember to bring along is a portable crib. Pack-and-Plays work fine too. The important thing is that you have a safe place for your baby to sleep during your time away from home. Portable cribs also provide a nice and safe place for your child to play as well.
Blankets. You will need more than one blanket on your next trip. More than likely, something will happen and you will have to use one of the blankets for something other than its intended use. Therefore, keeping a spare nearby is definitely a necessity. Also, remember that you will need to pack some type of bedding for the portable crib so your little one isn’t sleeping on a hard “mattress.”
Clothes. Oh yes, baby clothes. When it comes to babies, you really can’t ever pack too many clothes. Between spit up, runny noses and messy food, it’s inevitable that some of the clothing your little one starts his/her day in will get dirty, requiring you to change him/her into another outfit. Basically, when you think you have packed enough clothing for your little one, pack several more outfits just for good measure…then you might have enough to get you through the trip!
Teething Essentials. If your baby is close to the four month mark, you need to make sure you are prepared for teething, because it can start at any time. Drooling excessively is something that just happens, so bring lots of bibs. Your little one may also start experiencing gum pain due to teeth trying to break through. Children’s Motrin/Tylenol are great for temporarily relieving this pain. If you are looking for a quick fix, Orajel is the way to go!
Diapers and Wipes. Finally, don’t go off and forget the baby diapers and wipes. Depending on the length of your trip, it may be easiest just to pack an entire box of diapers and take with you. The good news about diapers and wipes is that if you forget or run out, you can always stop on the way and get more.
